Sofia Avgitidou


Sofia Avgitidou (Ph.D. Sussex) is a professor of Pedagogy and Teacher Education at the University of Western Macedonia, Greece. She has taught several courses including early childhood pedagogy, instruction, qualitative research methods and other courses in various universities and prostgraduate programmes including Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Open Greek University and the University of Cyprus. Her main research interests include ethnographic studies of children’s play and social relationships, initial teacher education, professional learning and action research as well as the study of childhood. She has published books and edited volumes on children’s social relationships, play and co-operative learning, teaching practice and professional learning for a co-operative and participatory education as well as a number of papers in international journals. Sofia has participated in European and national research programmes and is currently working with the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus in an innovative project regarding the support of teachers’ professional learning as well as in the Tocsin project. She has been a member of scientific committees in Greek and European conferences and is currently a national co-ordinator of the European Association of Early Childhood Research Association (EECERA) and convenor the EECERA SIG Rethinking Play. She is also a founding member of the Hellenic Observatory for Intercultural Education.
